Lens guide

You need to keep in mind below things while buying the Camera lens.

Brand

Not all lenses can fit your camera. So make sure that you buy the lens that is compatible with your Camera.

Focal length

Camera lens can be divided in 3 main types based on focal length.
  • Wide angle lens – Short Focal length (less than 35mm) Fish eye lens is a kind of wide angle lens Wide angle lens – Short Focal length (less than 35mm) Fish eye lens is a kind of wide angle lens.
  • Standard lens – Focal length between 35mm -70mm
  • Telephoto lens – large Focal lenght (more than 70mm – wild life and sports)
Lenses can also be divided in 2 types – Prime vs Zoom lens. In prime lens, we can not change the focal length. Zoom lens has variable focal length. Prime lens has better quality. Crop factor should also be considered. Most of the DSLR cameras have smaller sensor size. So to calculate the effective focal length (35mm sensor equivalent), we need to multiply the given focal length by 1.5 for most DSLR

Aperture

Aperture is another important factor. It is measured in f numbers. It is the opening through which light comes in the camera. Wider aperture (lower f-number) lenses allow you to take photos in low light conditions. But they are very costly.

Focusing

We should look if auto-focus or manual focus is provided in lens.
