Lens for DSLR or Mirrorless Camera

Compact cameras come with built-in lenses and we can not change the lens. But if you are using DSLR or Mirrorless camera, then you can easily change the lens and improve the quality of photos and videos. Camera lenses can be divided in 3 main types based on focal length.
  • Wide angle lens - Short Focal length (less than 35mm) Fish eye lens is a kind of wide angle lens Wide angle lens - Short Focal length (less than 35mm) Fish eye lens is a kind of wide angle lens. Use this when you want to capture landscape or big subject and surroundings.
  • Standard lens - Focal length between 35mm -70mm
  • Telephoto lens - large Focal length. Use this when you are unable to reach to the subject (more than 70mm - wild life and sports)
All above lenses can also be divided in 2 types
  • Prime
  • Zoom lens
In prime lens, we can not change the focal length. Zoom lens has variable focal length. Prime lens has better quality. Here are some important things that you need to remember when buying lens
  • Compatibility - is the lens compatible with my Camera?
  • Crop factor should also be considered. Most of the DSLR cameras have smaller sensor size. So to calculate the effective focal length (35mm sensor equivalent), we need to multiply the given focal length by 1.5 for most DSLR.
  • Aperture is another important factor. Wider aperture (lower f-number) lenses are very costly.
  • We should look if auto-focus or manual focus is provided in lens.
  • When the camera shakes while shooting the video, image quality may degrade. So you should check if lens provides the image stabilization feature.

Some more categories

  • kit lense - basic lens
  • fixed aperature - aperature fixed even if focal length is changing
  • variable aperature - aperature changes when focal length is changing
  • fish eye - wide eye angle lens
  • Macro lense - photo of small objects - insects
