What size shet tale you need for your farming land

Shet tale (farm pond) is used to store water for agriculture related purposes.

Shet tale (farm pond) Size

Let's assume that you have 10 acre land and you need approximately 1 lakh litre of water to irrigate 1 acre of land. So let's say you need to store around 10 lakh litres of water.

In this case you will need to dig a pond with below dimensions.

If you dig a shet tale with that dimensions, total volume of the pond will be 36000 cubic ft (length x width x height) which can accomodate around 10 lakh lit of water (1 cubic ft = 28.31 liter). **But Remember that shet tale width and length is never accurate. It's like a pyramid. So you will need to adjust the values accordingly. Dimensions I have shown above are average dimensions.

Most of the times, people need to know how many tankers it will take to fill the pond (shet tale). To calculate this, you need to divide the total pond capacity by the total capacity of a tanker. So assuming that a tanker has a capacity of 12000 litre, then total tanker needed to fill above pond will be around 85.

Government subsidy

Please check if state government is providing any subsidy for the construction of pond. In Maharashtra, they provide subsidy under scheme named as "Shet tale Yojna"

Durability

Durability of shet tale depends on thickness of polythene sheet used. Higher the thickness, more is the durability. Generally polythene of 200 to 300 micron is used and it lasts till 10 to 20 years.

Cost

Cost to construct depends on area and texture of soil. Bigger pond means more cost. Also If underground soil contains lot of stones, you may need to use explosives and that way cost may increase quickly. Total cost to build shet tale on 1 acre is around 8-10 lakhs. Almost Half the cost is for Polythene sheet. But see if you can get subsidy on it.
