Domain name system – DNS – Nameservers – How it works
If you know the IP address, you can talk to host but remembering the ip address is not easy and practical So domain names were introduced.
- Domain names are easy to remember. You can buy domain names from various domain providers like godaddy.com, Hostgator etc
- Process of converting domain name to IP address is called as DNS lookip. It is done using name servers, authoritative server and root server. e.g To do the lookup of www.softpost.org, root server is contacted to find out the name server for top level domain (TLD) “.org”. Then authoritative domain server is contacted to find out the IP address of actual domain “softpost”.
- You can use ping command to get the IP address of any domain
- https://whois.icann.org/en/lookup – This website provides domain lookup service and returns the domain’s public info like name server
