  1. The Linux Foundation: Established to promote, protect, and advance Linux, The Linux Foundation now supports numerous projects beyond Linux, including Kubernetes, Node.js, and Hyperledger. It serves as a neutral ground for collaboration and development for a wide array of technology sectors.

  2. Free Software Foundation (FSF): Dedicated to promoting computer user freedom, the FSF encourages the development and use of free (as in freedom) software. It's known for the GNU Project, which aims to provide a complete Unix-like operating system composed entirely of free software.

  3. The Eclipse Foundation: Provides a mature, scalable, and business-friendly environment for open-source software collaboration and innovation. It oversees numerous projects primarily focused on development tools for Java, but it has expanded to other languages and technologies as well.

  4. The Mozilla Foundation: Focuses on promoting openness, innovation, and participation on the Internet. It is best known for the Mozilla Firefox browser, but it also works on other projects aimed at fostering a healthy internet and user privacy.

  5. Software in the Public Interest (SPI): A non-profit organization which was founded to help organizations develop and distribute open hardware and software. SPI acts as a fiscal sponsor for projects like Debian, Drupal, and many others.

  6. Open Source Initiative (OSI): Known for its Open Source Definition (OSD) and the categorization of licenses that comply with that definition, OSI is a global non-profit that advocates for open source and certifies open source licenses.

  7. The Document Foundation: Behind LibreOffice, a free and open-source office suite, The Document Foundation promotes open document formats and open-source software.

  8. The Python Software Foundation (PSF): Supports the development of the Python programming language and its community. The PSF manages the open-source licensing for Python version 2.1 and later and owns and protects the trademarks associated with Python.

  9. The GNOME Foundation: Supports the development of the GNOME desktop environment, an intuitive and attractive desktop for users, and the GNOME development platform, an extensive framework for building applications that integrate into the rest of the desktop and mobile UI.

  10. Outercurve Foundation: Formerly known as the CodePlex Foundation, it supports the development of open-source projects regardless of technology or platform.

  11. Open Source Geospatial Foundation (OSGeo): Supports and promotes the collaborative development of open-source geographic information systems (GIS) software, and promotes the use of open-source GIS software and data in education and research, in the commercial and governmental sectors.

  12. Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF): Hosts critical components of the global technology infrastructure, including Kubernetes, Prometheus, and Envoy. The CNCF brings together the world’s top developers, end-users, and vendors and runs the largest open-source developer conferences.
